1) Promotion sampling
enables your product to get directly
to your target consumer. Eliminating
any lag time associated with traditional
sales cycles.
2) Word-of-mouth: generating
word-of-mouth sales is a great
promotional sampling idea. Sometimes
students shy away from traditional
advertising, justifying this behaviour
by seeing advertising as too intrusive.
Students in particular take friendly
recommendations very seriously.
3) Competition: The university
and college environment is very
competitive. Adults may keep up
with what their neightbors have
in their garage, but students
keep up with what their classmates
have in their school bags.
4) Goodwill: most students see
free products as a generous donation
to their well-being, rather than
a marketing plan including a product
sampling idea component
5) Risk-free: budget-conscious
students may not ever purchase
your product until they are sure
that it will benefit them. Give
them a sample that benefits them
and you have eliminated your this
initial purchase risk.
Great Product Sampling
Ideas to Incorporate
1) Create a "starter kit":
distribute a sample that includes
all of the benefits of your full
scale model but perhaps cannot
be used for the same duration
that the "full-version"
could be. i.e. large consumer
packaged goods companies like
P&G distribute mini cereal
boxes to give prospective customers
a taste. A starter sample may
also be less expensive to produce
than than the original.
2) Sample size: perhaps it only
takes one bite to know whether
or not you enjoy the packaged
good sample, but it will take
more than one application for
students to know that your shampoo
is working.
2) Make the product transferrable:
investigate ways that students
may be able to share your sample
with their friends. Sample sharing
will exponentially increase results
while forcing word-of-mouth advertising.
3) Add a Coupon: coupons add
little to the cost of the promotion,
with great benefits: Encouraging
the first post-sample purchase
with a coupon dramatically increases
your conversion rate. Also, redeemed
coupons are an effective way to
track and evaluate the results
of your sampling effort.
